Part 2 Foreshdowing

There is one moment of foreshadowing that I saw that I just couldn’t ignore. On page 30, George says something that he’s said before and will probably be very important in the future. This was “Look, Lennie, if you get in any kind of trouble, you remember what I told you to do?” George is referring to the spot by the river that they slept at in chapter one. He has said this before and I have no doubt that he will say it again.
I think that the reason he might get into trouble could be due to Curley’s wife. I think this because Lennie was looking at her in a way that made George afraid of Lennie getting in trouble. Also, Curley already hates Lennie because he hates people that are taller than him, so if Lennie was to even look at her in a way that he didn’t like, Curley would get very angry and probably get him fired because he is the boss’ son. It seems as though Curley is very proud of having a wife, so he would be very angry to see her hurt or near another man. While I feel like it is nice that Curley seems to treasure his wife, I think he forgets she is her own person and objectifies her.
Overall, my prediction is that there will be a situation involving Curley’s wife that gets Lennie in trouble and he runs to the spot by the river as instructed.

  1. This is a really good entry "Dillpickle" :-) A lot of the things that you mentioned I was also thinking throughout the book. I think that Curly's Wife is trouble! And I am afraid for Lennie, because he has pretty bad judgement, and she is definitely not setting a good example. You said in the end of your blog that you think Lennie will end up in the spot by the river, but here I disagree. My fear, and prediction, is that Lennie will forget where is is supposed to go in the confusion of a troubled time OR that he will remember, but yet lost on his way there, and not be able to find his way back.

  2. I agree with both of you. I also think that the book is foreshadowing that Lennie might get into some sort of trouble regarding Curley's Wife. I think that because of George reminding Lennie not to do anything bad. I think that George should try to keep his eye on Lennie because things might go South. It seems that Curley is like a ticking time bomb, waiting to do something to Lennie if he touches his wife. To Curley, his wife is like his "trophy". If George doesn't keep an extra-cautious eye on Lennie, there might be lots of trouble ahead.

  3. You guys make really good points and I also think that Curley's wife is going to be trouble not just with Lennie though but trouble with lots of the other characters. I also think that the book is foreshadowing that Curley and Lennie are going to get into trouble with each other.
