This section of Of Mice and Men reveals the predatory nature of humans. Even though Curley's wife isn't in a situation any better than Candy, Crooks, or Lennie, she still picks on them. She insults Candy's dream and points out to Crooks that he is a negro. Crooks, Candy, and Curley's wife are all picking on each other (Lennie is too kind to pick on others) in order to make themselves feel better.
Finally, I realized that Curley's wife was also very lonely in Of Mice and Men. At first, I thought that she was speaking to the other guys to make Curley jealous, but I realized that she was just lonely and wanted people to speak to her and notice her. I noticed how lucky George and Lennie were to have each other in the book since Crooks, Candy, and Curley's wife all showed how lonely they were. Curley's wife expresses her discontent with her husband in the book, and she even says that she'd like to bust Curley up herself sometimes. I wonder what her history was because she said something about being in shows and pictures in the book. Even though my opinion of Curley's wife improved a little in this section, I'm still worried about something that she said. On page 80, Curley's wife said to Lennie: "O.K., machine. I'll talk to you later. I like machines." This worries me because it indicates that she might try to speak to Lennie later when he is alone (foreshadowing).
I agree with you because Curley's wife is a woman and women didn't really matter back then. Even though she is married to a higher rank in the story, she is still not wanted and nobody cares (except Curley). Lennie technically isn't weak physically but mentally. Also I agree with you about her wanting someone to talk to know but at the same time I think she is trying to play them. However, in her words still spoke truth. I think the same thing about your foreshadowing.

ReplyDeleteI agree with you both about how curley's wife just wanted someone to talk to. She also wanted some attention because women weren't that important back then. What's ironic is that they had left all the weak ones but lennie is phisicaly strong and crush a person but they left him because his mind is weak those men would just slow the other men down.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with all of you! I do see how Curleys wife is a women, and they did not get most of the attention in a sense that they had a harder time finding a place to work etc. I do think she is married to a higher rank but still does not matter to most people. I do however think people are more respectful just because she is the wife of a higher rank (and a man with a big temper). I do however think Lennie is strong physically but I do think he can be strong mentally. He defiantly is strong when he beat up Curley, but he does tend to remember stuff and stick to his word. I think he will get stronger mentally throughout the book. I think Curleys wife does just want someone to talk to like Lennie. Someone who will just listen to her. I think that Lennie will get into something with Curelys wife, like a bad situation. It seems that Curleys wife does want someone to talk to but will also get Lennie into trouble. However I think this will lead to foreshadowing.
ReplyDeleteI can relate to your first impression of Curley's wife, Marina. At first I thought that she was just an infidel, attention- seeking troublemaker, but after reading part four, I realize that she was just bored and lonely. I also think that in reality, she would rather not be married to Curley because of his irascible and possessive disposition, and that she would rather have more liberty. Seeing as how back then, women faced so much prejudice and she was the only woman on the ranch with a bunch of men, she had to have felt lonely and desolate. I agree with you prediction, Kathleen. I do think that something is going to happen where Lennie gets in trouble for talking to Curley's wife. But, I would go even further to predict that it will be serious, and Lennie will get fired, and George will get involved. Because Curley is pugnacious and ill- tempered, I predict that he will get jealous and there might even be another fight.
